Charlena (Dempsey) Mask and Jackie Culvahouse
These Mountains were once the highest in the world (as was told to me by my grandfather Victor). Of course that was many centuries ago, but you get the drift.
The following is from Lajuan (Nichols) Norvelle as she remembers them.
“The mountains! Oh how we loved the mountains and still do. The mountains and the river were our most popular recreational area. You could spend an entire day roaming there and come home feeling as though you were a World Explorer. There is Mt. Tepee to the northwest, Camelback Mountain at the extreme north of the Con. 8 area and Twin Mountains at the extreme east but most of the mountains were in the Shiloh school area (down in the bend). Of course, this does not include the mountains around Lake Altus (Lugert Lake to most of us), because these are not really in the Con. 8 area. Although, I am sure many Con. 8 students have spent time, climbing and roaming over them, looking for and exploring Devil’s Canyon. There has been much discussion regarding the names applied to the Con. 8 mountains. Some have permanent names and others’ names seem to change depending on the name of the family who lived closest to it. Jack Culvahouse and Charlena (Dempsey) Mask spend several days, in the early 2000’s, climbing and photographing.”
