Notes of Interest

This was Mr. Ayres’ first year at Con. 8. LaNell (DeWees) Frick remembers that one year Mr. Williams and Mr. Ayres shared a room in the main teacherage. It seems clear that this would be the only year both were there. The year of Mr. Ayres arrival was gotten from a story in the April 1938 Student Review discussing teacher contracts for fall 1938, which says that “Mr. Ayres has been here four years, Mrs. Ethridge and Mr. and Mrs. Woods three year”. LaNell’s recollection is not the only evidence of Mr. Williams’ presence this year. Wilma (Duke) Stout remembers that Mr. Williams was the girls’ coach this year and thinks he may have been the boys’ coach again as well which means that Mr. Ayres would not have coached either senior team this year.

Wilma also remembers that Mr. Alexander and Mr. Graves were friends and shared an apartment in the teacherage for one year.

Class pictures show that Mrs. DeWees had both grades 1 & 2, and Mr. Alexander had grades 6 & 7. The presence of Miss Fraley and Miss Jackson was remembered by Dorothy (Estoll) Shelton who was in the 5th grade this year and thinks that Miss Jackson may have each had some of the 4th grade. The grades taught by Mrs. DeWees and Mr. Alexander were deduced from the students identified in the group pictures.

Pictures of the third, fourth and fifth classes probably exist in two separate groups with the same backgrounds.

The teachers for the missing grades should be Miss Jackson, (see the 8th grade picture), and Miss Stella Fraley.

High School Graduates

Graduating Class of 1934-1935

Class Photo: 8th Grade / Teachers: Mrs. Mabel Wilks & Miss Bertha Jackson

The eighth grade was taught as part of high school as it was in the following two years.  The picture is similar in content to the one the next year (See 1935-1936 pictures) which is also identified as an eighth-grade picture.

Picture from LaNell (DeWees) Frick via Maggie (Barnes) Walker.  Identifications were written on the back of the picture.

Two teachers are shown as was the case in the next year. Mrs. Mabel Wilks was probably the main teacher and may have taught other subjects in high school. Miss Bertha Jackson has been identified as at least the room teacher for the 4th and 5th grade room this year. There may have been some team teaching. Both Mrs. Wilks and Miss Jackson were very interested in dramatics and elocution. LaNell’s notations indicate that all but the two little girls and Ruby Fowler are in the eighth grade. Ruby is also pictured with the 6 & 7 grades and Gaynelle with the 1 & 2 grades on this same day.  I can think of no reason that Ruby would be in this one.
