Notes of Interest

This was the first graduating high school class.

George Dempsey remembered that Roy Williams was the boys’ basketball coach this year. A photo of Cooperton students for the year 1926-1927 shows Roy Williams and Willard Smith (a 1943-1944 Con. 8 teacher). The caption states that Willard Smith was the first Cooperton High school graduate in 1928. It seems from this information the earliest Roy could have graduated from high school is 1929, and it is probable that this is Roy’s first year teaching.

Wilma (Duke) Stout has found a picture of the entire high school student body and teachers taken on “Senior Day”. The teachers shown are DeWees, Williams and Atchinson. The people shown in the picture agree with the assumption that grade 8 was with the high school. A link to the picture page is given in the next section as it is the only source of near contemporary pictures for some of the 1934 graduates.
