School Year 1935 – 1936

This was the first year at Con. 8 for Mr. Woods,  Mrs. Woods, and Mrs. Blanche Ethridge.  It appears that Mr. Woods replaced Mr. Williams who had married Goldie (?) also a teacher for which there was no open position at Con. 8 that year.  It has been mentioned that he may have taken a position at Altus.  Wilma (Duke) Stout remembered that Mr. Ayres coached both the Boys and the Girls basketball teams this year.

Major improvements were underway this year.  A renovation of the Gym was underway, and preparations made for getting new school buses.  Landscaping improvements were undertaken.  The Spring 1936 photograph of the school shows the Gym already with a new paint job and excavations done made for the planting of trees although no trees are visible.

The background is probably the Gym, and it fits in with the background on other 1935-1936 group pictures. The eighth grade was with the high school this year, as it had been in the past. Thus Mr. Ayers (English) and Mr. Woods (most other subjects) would have been principal teachers. Lorena has suggested 8’th or 9’th grade. It was part of the standard group photograph sequence for 1935-1936, and the eighth grade, with several absent. Note that Wesley Wiley who was reported as 6′ 2″ tall in his senior high school year is shorter than Mr. Woods who I think was less that 5′ 8″.

So far I have four grade school group photos for this year. There should be one more picture,  the fourth and fifth (Mrs. Woods probably).  The background will be the same as for these.  Any Comments on the ID’s would be valuable.  Also some people may have better quality photos of the examples here.  I would like to arrange for copies for the “Archive”.
